Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. This vernacular residence is the result of a number of additions. The building is frame, covered with clapboards, and one story in height. In plan the building is T shaped with a shed addition appended to the east wing. Section on west side is oldest part of house (has gable shutters). Bay window to front of oldest section. Joseph Osborn was one of the pioneers in early Oshkosh. Arriving in 1844, he opened the first general store in the city in 1846. House oldest surviving in Oshkosh - allegedly he was one of the early surveyors in Oshkosh, naming several streets. Opened first abstract office in county. Published first history of the county with Martin Mitchel in 1856 and first map of the county. County surveyor 1845-1848. County clerk - 1852 - 1857. Alderman 1860-1861. President of the State Railroad Commission - 1874-1876. President of the State Grange 1876-1877. Born 1821 - died 1892. |
