It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. DAMAGED BY FIRE ON 12/5/1996. DENTICULATED CORNICE W/GABLED PARAPETS. SEGMENTAL ARCHED WINDOWS. THE ORIGINAL BUILDING, KNOWN AS THE PALMYRA HOUSE, WAS THE TOWN'S FIRST HOTEL. IT BURNED IN 1859 AND WAS REBUILT AS THE WISCONSIN HOUSE. IN 1876 AUGUST TISCHAEFER ENLARGED IT. HABS WI-17. This two-story commercial building, historically known as the Tisch House, was constructed c.1876. It is of brick masonry construction with a rectangular plan on a stone foundation. The flat roof is ornamented with a parapet of brick and stone featuring two elaborate upward projections on the front (southeast) facade and side (southwest) elevation, which are rectangular and triangular, respectively. There are two interior brick chimneys. The second-story windows are replacement, one-over-one, double-hung sash with segmented arches and stone lintels. First-story windows are a combination of replacement, one-over-one, double-hung sash with segmented arches and stone lintels and replacement, single-pane, square windows. The building also features a corbelled brick band, segmented arches over most doors, and a gray stone nameplate that reads “The Tisch House.” First-story storefronts on the far sides of the facade (southeast) have been infilled with brick and a few windows have been infilled. What were once recessed storefront entrances on the front (southeast) facade and side (southwest) elevation have been replaced with large double doors. |
