WRAP AROUND PORCH. 2016 - APPEARANCE UNCHANGED. 2016- "This two-story, cross-gable house was constructed by Hans J. Anderson in 1879. It is clad in cream brick and rests on a stone foundation. Asphalt shingles cover the low-pitched roof with an interior brick chimney, ridgeline vent, wide overhanging eaves, and a simple wood cornice. The house displays modest decorative embellishments associated with the ltalianate style, including tall windows with elaborate hoods and sills. A one-story, low-pitched, hip roof porch spans the front (west) facade and wraps around the corners of the side (north and south) elevations. It features a pediment with decorative wood work, Tuscan columns, and a turned wood balustrade. A bay window with wood panel details is located on the side (south) elevation. Windows are one-over-one and two-over-two, double-hung sash; large, fixed sash, picture window with leaded header; and small, single-pane, fixed sash. A decorative wrought iron fence is located at the back edge of sidewalk on the front (west) and side (north) of the parcel. A c.1950 garage is located southwest of the rear elevation. Anderson was a realtor who owned a local meat market and bowling alley, as well as an excursion boat on Rock Lake. By 1884 the Lorenzo Dow Fargo family was living in the house. Fargo started as a farmer and later became a banker. He was a major contributor to the construction of the National Register-listed L.D. Public Library in Lake Mills. From the 1930s through 1990s the house served as a rental property; however, it currently appears to be a single-family residence." -"CTH A: Madison St to Grant St", WisDOT#3638-00-72/73, Prepared by Mead & Hunt, Inc., (2016). |
