Additional Information: | Combination store and house. 1993: This multi-gabled, building consists of a one-story, false-front commercial, clapboard building appended to the north wall of a two-story, clapboard, side gable house. The residence was likely built first, c.1870s-1880s, while the commercial building was probably constructed c.1890s. The commercial building features multipane display windows and a canted corner entrance and except for a replacement side entry door, the fenestration is original. when the commercial section was built, it either covered the original residence entrance in the front gable side, of the entrance was in a side wing replaced by the commercial building. The enclosed porch of the residence was probably built at the same time as the commercial section to provide a new entrance to the house. the windows of the porch are likely original, while those of the house were probably replaced during the c.1890s renovations. The commercial building was constructed as a general store by Ernst Schmidt who was the proprietor until 1927 when it was sold to Harry Schindelholz who operated the store until 1960. |
