Additional Information: | The bridge was re-decked in 1987 when the bascule span was disabled and paved over. The city built a "Marsupial Bridge" beneath the main deck in 2005 for use by pedestrians and bicylists which was designed by La Dallman Architects Inc. of Milwaukee. It crosses the Milwaukee River, connecting the Brady Street area with the Beer Line. 2021: The N. Holton Street Viaduct (P-40-875) was constructed in 1926 with the center portion of the bridge over the Milwaukee River operating as a bascule bridge. The viaduct measures 955.5 feet in total length with 15 metal bents (also known as piers) and concrete abutments supporting its 15 spans. A new railing was added to the structure in 1972 with repairs to the substructure and superstructure in 1987. As part of the 1987 repairs, the bridge deck was paved and the original bascule mechanism was disabled and partly removed. A pedestrian marsupial bridge (P-40-910) was added below the deck (running between bents 4 and 13) in 2004. moveable bridge |
