Additional Information: | CONGREGATION DISBANDED IN 1968. .1976 survey map code is 12/24. Also the church of the German Evangelical Society. This was the second church building built in the village. The establishment of his church was opposed by the established Swiss Reformed Church. For many years this congregation met outside of the village. In 1865 the congregation moved into the village and bought this parcel by 1870. This building has been designated a local landmark. The Evangelical Church is a simple gabled roof structure with a side entrance tower. The Evangelical Association was organized after itinerant preachers came into the area in 1847. In 1859 the Association built a church outside the village as there was opposition within New Glarus toward this new congregation. By 1865 the opposition had dissipated and the congregation moved into town. This structure was built a number of years later. IN 1968 THE CHURCH WAS PURCHASED BY THE LOCAL MASONIC FRATERNAL GROUP AND TURNED INTO THEIR MASONIC LODGE. (2015) |
