NOTES
Additional Information:SEE HAER FORM. (A.) Estimate on the date of construction is based upon the first evidence of subdivision (1895) and first segrated improvements schedule for the 3.5 acre site (1905), from tax rolls Ellington Township Section 13. (B.) Structure may predate this date (see above), the Standard Atlas of Outagamie County 1889, does not show a cheese factory on this site. OAHP INVENTORY (08/1981): A portion of this structure was probably constructed by Mr. F. Decker in 1895 as part of the original creamery. In 1897 the creamery was purchased by Mr. P. Wallace and sold to Mr. Charles Buck in 1913, who operated the creamery under the name of "Gopher Hill" until its subsequent sale to Mr. Lenord Bentle in 1923. The operation was run by the Bentle family under the name of Gopher Hill Cheese, until being forced to close in 1978 by the D.N.R. The plant had served up to 50 patrons prior to closing. The existing structure measures approximately 60' x 150'. The earliest remaining portions of the plant are located toward the center of the complex. This two story section is built upon rubble foundation and sidewalls. The framed second story has been converted to residential use. Additions were added to teh north in 1952 and to the south in the late sixties. cheese factory
