It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. Black Point (Pier 580) commands a magnificent vista from a prominence on the southern shore. Built in 1888, it was the home of Catherine and Conrad Seipp, a German-born brewer. Architect and furniture-designer Arthur Cudell of Chicago planned the clapboard house with a pronounced asymmetry and a delightful panoply of turned columns and spindles associated with the Eastlake idiom of the Queen Anne style. Originally, a polychromatic paint scheme highlighted the exuberant woodwork, including a tulip bracket motif. The structure’s most notable feature is the polygonal tower that extends far above the side-gabled roof. At the top, an oversized balustraded deck supported by oversized brackets offers an extraordinary lake view. Inside, the house included a billiard room and a music room. The dining room, redecorated in 1903, includes burlap wall-coverings hand-stenciled with grapevine garlands. The room’s built-in buffet along the full length of one wall features bottle-glass in some of the cabinet doors. Black Point sits on nearly six acres of wooded land, the result of an extensive planting effort by Olaf Benson of Chicago, a landscape architect, who planted seventy evergreen species, dominated by spruce and Norway pine. #67845 #67846 #67847 #68125 #68126 #68127 #68128 #68219 #68130 #68131 #68132 #68133 An easement for the property can be found in the site file.
