NOTES
Additional Information:ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT:
SIMPLE CROSSETTED WINDOW FRAMES AND CONTRAST BETWEEN STONE AND BRICK WORK CONTRIBUTE TO THE JACOBEAN CHARACTER OF THIS BUILDING. THE PROPORTIONS, HOWEVER, ARE BROAD WITH THE BUILDING CAPPED BY A LOW GABLE ROOF. IN COMPARISON, THE EAGLES BUILDING (OS 10/6) IS A WELL DEVELOPED EXAMPLE OF THIS JACOBEAN STYLE.

HISTORICAL STATEMENT:
THE LABOR HALL WAS ACQUIRED FROM THE LOYAL ORDER OF MOOSE IN 1944. PRIOR TO THE MOOSE OWNING IT, HOWEVER, THE PROPERTY WAS OWNED BY THE SONS OF HERMAN - A GERMAN FRATERNAL GROUP - WHO, IN TURN, PURCHASED THE BUILDING FROM THE GERMAN-ENGLISH ACADEMY IN 1895. THE GERMAN-ENGLISH ACADEMY BUILT THEIR BUILDING IN 1875 FOLLOWING THE GREAT FIRE. THE SONS OF HERMAN UNDERTOOK A MASSIVE REMODELING OF THEIR BUILDING IN 1898 WHICH INCLUDED A NEW BRICK VENEER OVER THE FRAME BUILDING. IT IS SOMEWHAT UNCLEAR HOWEVER, IF THE EXISTING BUILDING IS THE MADE OVER BUILDING OR A SUBSEQUENT BUILDING. (C) INSPECTION OF THE STONE WALLED BASEMENT WOULD INDICATE THE FOUNDATION, AT LEAST, DATES FROM THE 1875 DATE.

PREVIOUS OWNERS DATES USES

SONS OF HERMAN 1895-1913 FRATERNAL CLUB
