NOTES
Additional Information:ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT: THIS IS THE ONLY DEPOT REMAINING FROM THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. THE DESIGN IS ECLECTIC, STEEP HIP ROOFS, CENTRAL PAVILION AND PROJECTING CUPOLAS ORIGINALLY SUGGESTED A CHATEAUESQUE INFLUENCE. THE BUILDING ORIGINALLY CONSISTED OF THREE DISTINCT SECTIONS CONNECTED BY A ROOFED PLATFORM. THE CENTRAL SECTION CONTAINED TICKET OFFICES, MEN'S AND WOMEN'S WAITING ROOMS. SEPARATE BUILDINGS SERVED AS BAGGAGE AND COAL STORAGE ROOMS. IN 1902, THE CENTRAL PROTION WAS EXTENDED TO JOIN WITH THE BAGGAGE ROOM (B). THE BUILDING IS CONSTRUCTED OF BRICK, RESTING ON A CUT LIMESTONE FOUNDATION. Built by Clark and Fuller, Chicago contractors. HISTORICAL STATEMENT: THE DEPOT WAS BUILT IN 1884 BY THE C&NW RAILROAD FOR ITS PASSENGER TRAIN SERVICE TO OSHKOSH. ITS SIGNIFICANCE IS IN ITS SURVIVAL AS THE LAST DEPOT FROM A PERIOD WHEN RAIL TRANSPORTATION WAS THE ECONOMIC LIFELINE OF THE CITY. OSHKOSH GREW TO ITS PROMINENCE IN THE STATE LARGELY BECAUSE RAIL TRANSPORTATION ALLOWED ITS PEOPLE AND PRODUCTS TO TRAVEL THROUGHOUT THE STATE AND NATION.
