NOTES
Additional Information:A substantially altered structure, the brick exterior has been covered with a stucco-like material, the windows have been reduced in size, and the bell tower removed.

Belmont's first school house was a log structure which stood within the proposed village limits in 1867 when surveyors arrived to plat the site. The building was repaired and used for educational purposes until 1871 when a two story frame structure was built at a cost of $6,000. It is pictured in Belmont's bicentennial publication. As the community continued to grow, a three year high school course was added in 1899 and in 1902 this brick building was erected. It is on the same site as its predecessor. An addition, housing a gymnasium was completed in 1941.

Following the organization of the Belmont Union Free High School Disctrict (1949), a new high school on the village's northeast side was built (1958) and later enlarged in 1966 and 1976-77. The 1902 structure, which has been substantially altered, currently houses Belmont's Grade School. An historic photo of the building is included in the 1976 publication. The building originally featured a belltower, large rectangular openings, and an entrance area defined by round arches.
