Additional Information: | A large corner tower, pointed arch openings, and buttresses distinguish this mid-twentieth century church. The Lutheran Church in Belmont was organized in 1884 following years of waiting by village residents (many of German Lutheran descent) who had previously traveled to Platteville to attend services. A frame church (included in the bicentennial publication) was constructed in 1884 and enlarged in 1925. Services were held in German for approximately twenty-five years before English was introduced. (Note: the 1895 and 1916 County Atlases included the name, German Lutheran Church). In 1944 the thriving congregtaion was devastated when a tornadao destroyed their church. Immediately, plans were underway to construct a new building which was completed in 1945. In 1958 a parish house, including a Sunday School, was added. |
