NOTES
Additional Information:SEE C.E. Webb, a town resident, for early photos of the town. Pointed arch openings and a corner tower with louvred belfry distinguish this vernacular illustration of the Gothic Revival style.

Organized in 1868, Belmont's Methodist Episcopal congregation first held services in the village's log schoolhouse. The church was originally affiliated with that in nearby Elk Groove which was founded in 1856 and named the head of the circuit of the West Wisconsin Conference. Once established, the congregation quickly appointed a pastor, Reverence W.P. Hill , and initiated a church-building program A lot was donated by Mrs. Charles Goodfellow and construction funds were solicited by Mrs. Goodfellow and Jane Bennett. Completed in 1870 and dedicated by Bishop Fellows, the frame structure was erected at a cost of $2,000.

In 1896 the church was enlarged by the addition of a new netrance (it appears the tower was added at this time) and an Epworth League room. Expanding again in 1905, the building was raised and a full basement completed. In 1922, a community hall, constructed on the east end of the church, was added. This facility, which was removed in 1943, provided the community with a social center and a gymnasium.
