NOTES
Additional Information:Three round arched openings on the second floor and the original cast iron support columns on the ground floor are prominent features of this early commercial building.

Used as a grocery and/or mercantile since its construction in 1868 (the building also housed the community's first post office), the current Rick's Market is the only commercial structure on the west side of Mound Avenue to survive both the 1884 and 1910 fires. In 1884 five buildings (including the St. Charles Hotel) north of the grocery were destroyed by a fire which was stopped from further destruction by the building's fire wall. In 1910 five buildings to the south were similarly destroyed.

The commercial block has had a number of owners including Edwin Johnson (the first occupant), W.P. Hughes (Hughes Mercantile), and Marshall Sweet (who added a restaurant).

An historic photograph of the building is included in the bicentennial book. Originally, a brick corbel table highlighted the building's cornice line. The historical edition of the Belmont Success also contained a photo - this picture was taken when the building was known as Sweet's store.
