"Sacred Heart Hospital was opened in 1893 by the School Sisters of St. Francis as a sanatorium for the care of patients with arthritis. Through the years the hospital's physical plant has been enlarged, almost every decade since the 1890's having brought additional construction, and the range of its services has increased greatly. Sacred Heart has become a teaching and rehabilitation hospital, serving to restore to daily living persons suffering from neurological disorders, injuries, and other conditions. The emphasis in treatment is, as it has always been, on the whole person." Pagel, Mary Ellen & Virginia A.
