Additional Information: | The First Methodist Church, currently known as Campbellsport United Methodist Church, was built in 1904. It is of frame construction, sheathed in vinyl siding, and rests on a limestone foundation. The steeply pitched hip roof is covered with asphalt shingles and features overhanging eaves, gable wall dormers, side steeple with exposed belfry, and an interior brick chimney. The bell was not present in the 1974 survey photo. An enclosed entrance vestibule with a lowpitched metal hip roof and modern entrance doors is located at the southeast corner of the front (east) facade. A onestory flat roof vestibule with wood panel door is located at the northeast corner of the front (east) facade. Windows include the original fixed rectangular and pointed arch with stained glass and transoms. A rectangular stone planter with metal sign is also located on the property. Access to the church interior was not available at the time of the field survey. The church was established in Campbellsport in 1862 and the original church building was constructed in 1875 for $320.00. By the early 1900s members of the church decided to construct a new church building. The original church was subsequently sold and the existing church building was constructed at its current location in 1904. The church is a modest example of a common vernacular form. While the church retains the belfry, stained glass, and pointed arch windows, it lacks sufficient architectural interest to qualify as eligible under Criterion C: Architecture. |
