Additional Information: | RISING TWO STORIES TALL, THIS COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR-STYLED RETAIL BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1859. (SEE BIB. REF. A). IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A STONE EXTERIOR, A STONE TRIM, AND A FLAT ROOF. CORBELLING DISTINGUISHES THE CORNICE, AND ADDS DIMENSION TO AN OTHERWISE SMOOTH, UPPER-STORY SURFACE. LOCATED BENEATH THIS CORNICE IS A STRING COURSE. STONE AGAIN IS USED TO FORM THE LINTELS AND SILLS, WHICH FRAME THE SECOND STORY WINDOWS. THE FIRST STORY IS COMPOSED OF PLATE GLASS AND WOOD PANELING. THE STRUCTURE IS IN GOOD CONDITION. THIS BUILDING WAS HISTORICALLY KNOWN BY THE FOLLOWING NAMES: THE WILLIAM AND NICK COAD BUILDING (SEE BIB. REF. A); THE LANYON AND SMITH DRY GOODS STORE (SEE BIB. REF. B); AND THE R. PENROSE MEAT MARKET (SEE BIB. REF. C). THE GROCERY AND DRY GOODS BUSINESS OPERATED AT THIS SITE FROM 1859 TO 1894. (SEE BIB. REF. A). A. SIEBERT OWNED THE BUILDING FROM 1917 TO 1924, AND RAN SIEBERT'S BAKERY THERE IN 1917. THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972. From "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press: "William and NIck Coad were members of a large multi-generational family who migrated from Cornwall in the 1840s; other members of the family built stone buildings elsewhere on High Street. This building was a commercial venture, first occupied by Lanyon & Smith Dry Goods store. Other businesses in this space over the years were R. Penrose Meat Market; Penrose & Roberts Meat Market; Gorgen & Pittz Grovcery; Siebert's Bakery; Grange Hardware; W. Paynte; Norb Pittz Wisco Hardware; Cody Groceries; and Dr. Gibbons Dental Office." From "Mineral Point Weekly Tribune", February 20, 1860: "Removal. Drs Weld & Turner have removed their Dental Office to the Rooms over Lanyon, Smith & Co's Store, North side of Hish Street, near corner of Chestnut. All work warranted." From "Mineral Point Tribune", December 18, 1890: "Gorgen & Pittz this week received a steam engine to supply motive power for the machinery in their meat market." |
