NOTES
Additional Information:CONSTRUCTED FROM 1866 TO 1869 (SEE BIB. REF. A), THIS TAVERN/BAR BUILDING WAS DESIGNED IN THE COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR STYLE. ITS STRUCTURAL MATERIALS INCLUDE A STONE FOUNDATION, STONE EXTERIOR WALLS, AND A STONE TRIM. THE PLAN CONFIGURATION IS RECTANGULAR IN FORM, AND THE ROOF IS FLAT IN SHAPE. A DECORATIVE STONE STRING COURSE APPEARS BENEATH THE PROTRUDING CORNICE. DISTINGUISHING THE ONE-OVER-ONE WINDOWS ON THE SECOND STORY ARE PROJECTING STONE LINTELS AND SILLS. THE STRUCTURE IS IN GOOD CONDITION.

THE THEODORE ENGELS SALOON IS THE HISTORIC NAME OF THIS BUILDING, WHICH ALSO ALLUDES TO THE NATURE OF THE BUSINESS HOUSED WITHIN. Engels was born in Germany in 1819, came to the United States in 1845, and settled in Mineral Point in 1847. FROM 1868 TO 1919, SALOON VENTURES OCCUPIED THIS SITE. (SEE BIB. REF. A).

THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972.

2012- " "Th. Engels 1869" is carved in one of the stones beneath the cornice but this building was constructed before 1869, possibly by E.D. Beouchard. Born in Montreal, Beouchard worked for the Hudson Bay Company in the West, came to Prairie du Chien in 1819 as a boatman, then mined in the Lead Region. Fluent in the Winnebago language, he was an interpreter for Henry Dodge in the Black Hawk War. He fought in the Mexican War before settling in Mineral Point.

This was also the site of Pesch's Barber Shop; Engel's Lager Beer Saloon; the Monarch Billiard Parlor; McMurrough & Kieffer's saloon; Treweeek Funeral Home;' Martin's Accounting; Gourmet Granny; The Spotted Dog; and Atomic Ice."
