OTHER ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS AND BUILDING MATERIALS INCLUDE AN EXTENDED PARAPET, A SHED ROOFED ADDITION, METAL SIDES AND THIN FIELDSTONE. INITIALLY, THIS STRUCTURE WAS A ONE STORY BUILDING (THE LOWER STORY WAS CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN 1900 AND 1908). THIS RETAIL STRUCTURE IS IN GOOD CONDITION. THIS BUILDING WAS KNOWN HISTORICALLY AS THE JOHN DAY BOOT AND SHOE STORE. (SEE BIB. REF. A). FROM C. 1910 TO 1929, A SHOE STORE CONDUCTED BUSINESS AT THIS ADDRESS. (SEE BIB. REF. A). THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, HAVING BECOME PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972. 2012- "This building was a one story stone building until some time before 1929 when it was widened and the second story added using concrete blocks. The one story version was used at various times as a carpenter shop, a carriage house, a blacksmith's shop, and a boot and shoemaker's shop. After it was enlarged, it served as a saloon. John Day, shoemaker, had his shop here; he was born in Mineral Point to parents who immigrated from Durham, England in 1857. John's father, Christopher, was also a shoemaker in Mineral Point. Other businesses at this location were Koske's Electric; The Rec Room; and Heaven Scent Office and Florals." -from "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press. |
