Additional Information: | Photo Code: tax project part 1. Storefront opened and restored to a historic appearance (2000). When recorded in 2000, the date of construction for this buidling was given as 1902, reportedly per tax records. A review of Sanborn maps indicates that there was a building on this parcel prior to 1919; however, it does not appear to be the same building that stands there today. According to Sanborn maps, today's structure was built between 1911 and 1919. October 2005-Built between 1911 and 1919, this one-story commercial building features a brick false front with a shaped parapet that is outlined by stone coping. The first level consists of a pair of storefront windows, as well as a doorway; a cloth awning separates the large windows from a transom row comprised of eight square openings. Although the original owner could not be ascertained, the structure was built no later than 1919; a Sanborn map from that same year identifies the building as the office for a plumbing concern in the front, while the rear operated as a tin shop. No further information regarding early owners or occupants could be found. The current occupant is the Door County Stencil Co. No information was found to support eligibility under either Criterion A or B. Regarding Criterion C, this structure is a good example of a small, early turn-of-the-century commercial building in the City of Sturgeon Bay. Although this structure has been appropriately restored to its current appearance, it lacks the character and/or defining features that might otherwise suggest eligibility under Criterion C. No changes have been made to the building since it was last surveyed, hence an update card is not needed. |
