Additional Information: | This three-bay, two-story cream brick retail building dates from the 1860's. Its principal remaining feature is the arcade effect of the series of arched windows on the second floor in a pattern reflecting a Roman aqueduct. The original cornice line has been removed and storefronts altered. This retail building was constructed in 1866 by the Louis Sherman Leather Company, a local tannery, as a local outlet for its boots and shoes. The Sherman Company tanned its own leather, manufactured and sold its own products, controlling the entire manufacturing and retail process. The Sherman Leather Company building is an example of a retail outlet for an early local industry. |
