NOTES
Additional Information:THIS HOUSE FEATURES AN IRREGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A STONE EXTERIOR, A WOOD TRIM AND A FLAT ROOF. THE ORIGINAL TRANSOMED ENTRANCE IS CENTERED ON THE FACADE WITH ALUMINUM FRAMED WINDOWS FLANKING EACH SIDE OF THE DOOR. IRREGULARLY CONFORMED STONE APPEARS ON THE SOUTH FACE. A PORCH WAS ALSO PRESENT ON THE SOUTH SIDE. (SEE BIB. REF. B). THIS RESIDENCE, BUILT BETWEEN 1857 AND 1858 (SEE BIB. REF. A), IS IN GOOD CONDITION.

INDIVIDUALS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS DWELLING AND THE DATES OF THEIR ASSOCIATION INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: PATRICK KANE, FROM 1857 TO 1917 AND HENRY HARTERT, AT AN UNKNOWN DATE. (SEE BIB. REF. A, C). THE BUILDING WAS USED AS A RESIDENCE FROM 1857 TO 1929. (SEE BIB. REF. A).

2012- "Some records give the date of construction of this building as 1857 but it is more likely to be 1870. A photograph of this area from 1864 shows two log cabins, side by side, at this site; the birds-eye map of Mineral Point shows that the cabins have been replaced by 1872.

Patrick and Anna Kane (sometimes spelled Cane) appear on the Mineral Point census records from 1850 through 1880. Patrick and Anna were both born in Ireland, as were their two oldest sons, John and Patrick; their other five children were born in Wisconsin. From the birthdates and birthplaces of the children, the Kanes evidently emigrated to Wisconsin between 1841 and 1844. Patrick Sr. is listed as a Smelter in 1850, a Miner in 1860, a Day Laborer in 1870, and again as a Miner in 1880, when he was 74 years old. The 1880 census lists his residence as being on Commerce Street in Mineral Point. Mrs. Anna Kane, widow, is listed at 108 No. Commerce Street in the 1898 City Directory of Mineral Point.

After Mrs. Kane died, this was the residence of Henry Hartert whose father had a grocery store a few doors south, on Commerce Street. The building has also served as an antique shop."
