NOTES
Additional Information:THIS TWO STORY COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR BUILDING FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION AND A FLAT ROOF. THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM IS MASONRY, WITH STONE COMPRISING THE FOUNDATION AND THE TRIM MATERIAL, AND BRICK COMPRISING THE EXTERIOR WALLS. WOOD IS ALSO USED AS A TRIM MATERIAL. FLAT STONE LINTELS, AND PROJECTING STONE SILLS ACCENT THE LARGE RECTANGULAR WINDOWS ON THE SECOND STORY. A STONE STRING COURSE DECORATES THE CORNICE. AT THE REAR IS AN ADDITION, BUILT FROM 1908 TO 1915. (SEE BIB. REF. D). THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF REHABILITATION, AT THE TIME THE INTENSIVE SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED, IN 1982. THE BUILDING IS CONSIDERED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION.

Alfred Jenkins Built the Globe Hotel in 1868. Nick Schillin bought the property in 1876 and added 225 Commerce St. A meat market occupied 223 Commerce St. in 1877. It later became the Hotel Office and then the saloon. William McKinly, who became president of the United States in 1897, visited the Globe Hotel in 1869. THIS BUILDING, CONSTRUCTED FROM 1877 TO 1878 (SEE BIB. REF. A), HAS HAD VARIOUS BUSINESS OVER THE YEARS OCCUPYING IT. A HOTEL WAS LOCATED HERE FROM 1877 TO 1929. (SEE BIB. REF. A). A RELATED STRUCTURE, THE GLOBE HOTEL (IA 15/23 AND 15/10), USED THE BUILDING FOR SPACE IN C. 1891. (SEE BIB. REF. C). THE JONES & BOUCHE MEAT MARKET RETAILED AT THIS SITE IN 1884. (SEE BIB. REF. A). ALTHOUGH THE STRUCTURE IS KNOWN HISTORICALLY BY ALL THESE BUSINESSES, IS MOST ASSOCIATED BY THE NAME, THE SHILLIN BUILDING. (SEE BIB. REF. B).

2012- "Built by Nicholas Schillen, originally from Prussia, as part of the Globe Hotel. Apparently, Schillen rented part of the building to others before using the space as the hotel's office.

In addition to the hotel, businesses here were the Goldworthy Brothers; Jones & Bouche Meat Market; Globe Hotel office; Stude's Tavern; Poad's Bar; Speck & Helen's Bar; Culter's Bar; and Roland Sardeson's Studio"
