Additional Information: | THIS THREE STORY COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR BUILDING FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION AND AN ASPHALT SHINGLED, GABLE ROOF. THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM IS MASONRY, WITH THE FOUNDATION, EXTERIOR WALLS AND TRIM MATERIAL ALL COMPRISED OF STONE. STONE IS ALSO USED IN THE DESIGN OF THE LINTELS, SILLS, STRING COURSE AND CORBELLED CORNICE. A NEW GROUND FLOOR, A FALSE FRONT AND A GABLE ROOF WERE ADDED SINCE 1982. THIS GABLED ROOF WAS ORIGINALLY A FLAT ROOF. AT THE REAR OF THE BUILDING, THE STONES ARE BULGING AND IN VERY POOR REPAIR. NEVERTHELESS, THE STRUCTURE IS CONSIDERED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION. BUILT IN 1857, THIS STRUCTURE WAS ORIGINALLY PLANNED TO BE USED AS A BREWERY BUILDING. (SEE BIB. REF. B). OVER THE YEARS IT HOUSED VARIOUS BUSINESSES. FROM 1876 TO 1924, A GENERAL STORE AND LATER A GROCERY, KNOWN AS THE W. J. JEUCK & BROS. GROCERY/MEAT MARKET OCCUPIED THE BUILDING. (SEE BIB. REF. D). W. J. JEUCK & BROS. WERE IN THE GROCERY BUSINESS FROM 1917 TO 1924. ANOTHER HISTORIC NAME OF THIS STRUCTURE WAS THE SAMUEL TERRILL BUILDING. (SEE BIB. REF. A). 2012- "Built by Cornishman Samuel Terrill; by 1869 it was owned by William N. curry who built the brick buildings immediately to the south. Businesses here were: Edwin Osborne Grocery and Provisions; William N. Curry; John Lanyon & Co.; William Hack; Geo Jeuck, grocer; W. J. Jeuck & Brothers, Grocery & Meat Market; Lawinger's Bar; and the Cruise Inn." -from "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press. |
