Additional Information:THIS TWO-STORY FEDERAL STYLED HOUSE FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION AND AN ASPHALT SHINGLED, GABLE ROOF. THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM IS MASONRY, WITH THE FOUNDATION, EXTERIOR AND TRIM ALL COMPOSED OF STONE. DURING THE MID-1980s A REAR ADDITION WAS CONSTRUCTED AND THE FACADE WAS REHABILITED; THE ENCLOSED, FLAT-ROOFED, FRONT PORCH HAS BEEN REMOVED AND THE SIX-OVER-SIX WINDOWS HAVE BEEN RESTORED. STONE LINTELS AND A BRICK END CHIMNEY ARE ALSO PRESENT IN THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN. THIS FORMER RESIDENCE WAS BUILT BETWEEN 1838 AND 1839. (SEE BIB. REF. A). The frame portion on the north end of the building was constructed in 1829. IT IS PRESENTLY IN GOOD CONDITION.

THE O'NEIL HOUSE IS THE HISTORIC NAME OF THIS STRUCTURE. (SEE BIB. REF. B). Mary, Ann's maiden name was Sublette. She was 15 when she married John. He was a Captain of Dragoons in the Blackhawk War. [D] LATER, IN 1924, FRED SHERMON BECAME ASSOCIATED WITH THE DWELLING. CURRENTLY USED FOR RETAIL, IT IS KNOWN AS O'NEIL'S OLD STAND.

HOWEVER, THE PRE-EMPTION CERTIFICATE, ACCORDING TO JENNIFER SHARP, ALSO USES THE TERM, "A STORE HOUSE." THE TAX RECORDS INDICATE A LATER CONSTRUCTION DATE BETWEEN 1856 AND 1858 BY THE RISE OF VALUE FROM $100 WHEN OWNED BY JACOB TYACK IN 1855 TO $950 AFTER THE PROPERTY WAS SOLD TO RICHARD ODGERS BEGINNING IN JANUARY, 1856 [ABSTRACT OF PORPERTY, IN POSSESSION OF OWNER; TAX RECORDS, 1856-1858). THE MORTGAGE OWED BY O'NEIL WAS FORECLOSED IN 1844. ACCORDING TO A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE IN THE WISCONSIN TRIBUNE DATED 16 MARCH 1849, "THE FIRST FRAME BUILDING [WAS BUILT BY J. F. O'NEIL AND IS NOW OCCUPIED BY N. CURRY AS A STORE ON COMMERCE STREET. THIS PROPERTY WAS OWNED BY NICHOLAS CURRY IN 1847-1848 (TAX RECORDS, 1848; ABSTRACT OF DEED, IN POSSESSION OF OWNER). B.
