Additional Information: | THIS TWO STORY BUILDING FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A STONE EXTERIOR, A COMBINATION STONE AND METAL TRIM AND A FLAT-SHAPED ROOF. REGULAR SHAPED STONE BLOCKS ARE USED ON THE FACADE, WHILE IRREGULAR SHAPED ONES ARE USED ON THE NORTH FACE. THE ARCHITECTURE PRESENTS VARIOUS ITIALIANATE ELEMENTS, SUCH AS THE SECOND STORY, SEGMENTALLY ARCHED WINDOW HOODS WITH KEYSTONE ACCENTS, AND THE BRACKETED AND DENTIL TRIMMED METAL CORNICE. STONE QUOINS APPEAR IN THE DESIGN AS WELL. THE RETAIL BUILDING/WAREHOUSE WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1878. (SEE BIB. REF. A). THE STRUCTURE WAS JOINED WITH A WAREHOUSE AND MILL OPERATION ADJACENT TO ITS SOUTH ELEVATION IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY. (SEE BIB. REF. D). IT IS PRESENTLY IN GOOD CONDITION. THIS STRUCTURE WAS HISTORICALLY KNOWN AS THE JAMES POLKINGHAM SALOON AND WAREHOUSE, (SEE BIB. REF. B), AND LATER AS THE GRABER AND THIES FEED STORE AND MILL, (SEE BIB. REF. C). THE SALOON, WITH THE WAREHOUSE LOCATED AT THE REAR, CONDUCTED BUSINESS IN 1884, AND THE FEED STORE WAS IN OPERATION FROM 1917 TO 1924. (SEE BIB. REF. A, E). IN 1866, THE SITE WAS OCCUPIED BY THE BREWER AND PENHALLEGON WAREHOUSE. 2012- "The date of construction is unclear although a building on this site appears on the 1872 bird's-eye map of Mineral Point. The current building may have been an expansion of an earlier one. The 1884 Sanborn map shows a saloon in the two story, Commerce street, section of the builiding while a three story warehouse section extended all the way to the railroad tracks that ran along what is now Water Alley. This was one of several warehouses built to accommodate merchatns who needed to store goods shipping to and from Mineral Point via the railroad. Other businesses here were R.J. Penhallegon, grain & Seed; Graber and Theis Feed Store and Mill; Martin Calf Feed Co.; and the Farmers Store. It was extensively reparied and restored in 2001 and 2002 and is now used as a private residence." -from "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press. |
