THE FEDERAL CABINET SHOP, AS THE BUILDING IS NOW KNOWN, IS IN GOOD CONDITION. THIS STRUCTURE, WHICH WAS HISTORICALLY CALLED THE GRATZ AND PALZKILL IMPLEMENT STORE, FUNCTIONED AS AN IMPLEMENT STORE IN C. 1945. (SEE BIB. REF. A). THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972. 2012- "In 1942, Clarence Gratz built this large brick building to house his farm implement store, demolishing the original building on the site, the Wisconsin House. Gratz awas born in Grant County, WI to parents of German heritage. The implement business was here until 1977 when it moved to larger quarters and this building became the home of the Federal Cabinet Shop. Renovation in 2008 restored the large pane glass windows which had been bricked shut. The original building on this site was the William Lanyon blacksmith shop which was later made into a hotel called the Wisconsin House and later the Keyes Hotel." -from "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press. |
