NOTES
Additional Information:THIS LIVERY (LUMBER YARD) FEATURES A STONE FOUNDATION, A COMBINATION STONE AND WOOD EXTERIOR, A WOOD TRIM AND A SHINGLED, GABLED ROOF. THE LOWER STORY AND FOUNDATION ARE COVERED IN STONE, WHILE THE UPPER STORY IS COVERED IN VERTICAL WOOD SIDING. THIS BUILDING, CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN 1871 AND 1884 (SEE BIB. REF. A), IS IN GOOD CONDITION. TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY LUMBER SHEDS REMAIN ON THE PROPERTY AS WELL. ONE ASPHALT SIDED SHED IS LOCATED AT THE REAR. THE SHED, WHICH WAS BUILT IN 1906 (SEE BIB. REF. C), IS ALSO IN GOOD CONDITION. NO FURTHER DESCRIPTION OF THESE SHED STRUCTURES IS GIVEN IN THE INTENSIVE SURVEY.

HISTORICALLY, THIS BUILDING AND SUBSEQUENTLY ITS SATILITE STRUCTURES WERE KNOWN AS THE HUTCHINSON LUMBER COMPANY LIVERY STABLE, (SEE BIB. REF. B); J. D. MARTIN AND COMPANY LUMBER YARD, (SEE BIB. REF. C); MARTIN AND PRIDEAUX LUMBER YARD; AND THE MINERAL POINT LUMBER YARD, (SEE BIB. REF. D). THE HISTORIC FUNCTION OF THESE BUILDINGS WERE AS WAREHOUSES. (SEE BIB. REF. A). THEY WERE USED AS SUCH FROM 1871 TO 1929. (SEE BIB. REF. A). PRESENTLY, THE FORMER LIVERY STANDS VACANT.

THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972.

2012- "The lumberyard started out as sheds and stables built for the Hutchison Lumber Company; these were altered and warehouses added over the years as needs changed. The two story building was the livery stable for the lumberyard's draft horses. The 1872 birdseye map of Mineral Point depicts some sheds in this area but they were probably the precursor of these buldings as other records indicated these were built later.

James Hutchison (sometimes spelled Hutchinson) was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, and came to Mineral Point in 1840 at the age of 21. He mined here for six years, then went to the Lake Superior area when copper was discovered; there he lost his right arm and right eye in a mining accident. Returing toMIneral Point, he taught himself to write with his left hand and ran for Clerk of Circuit Court. After several years as clerk, as well as farmer and grain dealer, he started in the lumber traded in 1864. He was elected Mayor of Mineral Point in 1869 and in 1875.

By 1891, the business was known as the Martin and Pirdeaux Lumber Yard with James D. Martin and Benjamin Prideaux as partners. By 1900 it was the J. D. Martin and Company Lumber Yard, then the Mineral Point Lumber Company from 1906 until it closed in the 1950s."
