DENTILS IN CORNICE, WINDOW HOODS

A.E. Diment Store Building: "Alfred E. Diment built the brown brick facade of this building in 1899 to match the Lappley building to the east. When the 1890 frame building behind the facade was destroyed by fire in 1906. Diment rebuilt his hardware store of brick and added a twenty- by sixty- foot space to the rear to accommodate a tin shop and warehouse, leaving the main facade unchanged. Although the first-floor storefront has been largely altered, the second floor of the facade is almost totally intact.

In later years the building has been a barbershop, office, and laundromat.

Born in the Town of Berry, Diment was an 1883 graduate of Mazomanie High School. He operated a hardware business from 1890 until 1912 when he moved to the state of Oregon." Mazomanie Downtown Historic District, Mazomanie Historical Society, 1993.

Henry Lappley Store Building: "Constructed of brown brick on a cut-stone foundation, this building was designed to house both the jewelry store and the family of Henry Lappley. Lappley used the left-hand two-story portion for his business and the right-hand portion for his home. A brick addition was made in 1906 following a fire which damaged the Diment building next door. Because they share a common facade, the Lappley and Diment buildings appear to be one large building.

A jeweler who repaired and sold clocks and watches, Lappley also sold dyes, drugs, eyeglasses, and silverware. Later the building was used as a grocery store, restaurant, and bar.

Born in Dane County in 1859, Lappley came to Mazomanie in 1890. The building remained in the Lappley family until 1967." Mazomanie Downtown Historic District, Mazomanie Historical Society, 1993.
