"This is the only frame construction retail store building in Mazomanie that dates from the post-Civil War period. Charles R. Vogel had this building constructed after 1890 fire destroyed the building that had previously occupied this site. The basement originally served as Vogel's meat market while the first floor was rented out to a furniture and undertaking business. In 1911 Vogel's son joined him in business on the first first floor of the building. In later years barbershops have been occupied the first floor of the building. The second floor has been used for residential purposes. Charles R. Vogel came to Mazomanie in 1879 from Sauk City and worked as a butcher for the Peters family until he built his own store. In all, he spent forty-five years in the meat business." Mazomanie Downtown Historic District, Mazomanie Historical Society, 1993. |
