Additional Information: | Photo code #2: 74FD-25/16-19 This church is constructed of several colors of brick due to its long completion date. It featuers a gable roof with returned eaves, brick corbelling, and pilasters. The large front tower was completed in 1911. It is a large square structure topped with an octagonal cupola with an onion-dome style roof. Heavy pilasters flare down from the tower to flank themain entrance. Openings in this church are round-arched and most are filled with stained glass. The main entrance is a set of modern glass doors topped with a round arch transom filled with stained glass. Two side entrances flank themain entrance and are similarly filed. To the west of the church is a large one-story school addition. This brick section features a flat parapeted roof, few details and window banks. The arched openings are the most common element of the style, and the fine domed tower is an added feature that gives the church a medieval quality. The simple school addition is not significant and a non-contributing element to the property. St. Patrick's Church was an offshoot of the first Catholic Church in Fond du Lac, St. Joseph's. Mostly Irish immigrants founded St. Patrick's in 1855. The congregation began building this church inthat year, but the main block was not completed until 1862. In 1911, the impressive front tower was finished, and between 1934 and 1941, the school addition was made. The church was made a local landmark in 1990. This church is not historically significant although it was associated with an ethnic institution, the Irish Catholic church. |
