The building was originally located on the corner of Washington and Nelson streets. It was moved to its present location in 1914. The cupola was added sometime prior to 1915. BELL CUPOLA W/ARCHED OPENINGS, PEDIMENTS. 2018 - This two-story municipal building with a Boomtown façade is centrally located in downtown Deerfield at the northeast corner of Deerfield and Main Streets. The building was originally constructed in 1885 on the southeast corner of Washington and Nelson Streets and moved to its present location in 1914. The building functioned solely as a town hall when it was originally constructed, and then became the fire station and village hall after it was moved. It still functions asa municipal building. The building has a rectilinear footprint and the façade faces west toward N. Main Street. The first story of the stucco-clad facade has been almost entirely reconfigured. An entry door is located at either end above-grade, with each accessed by its own set of concrete steps that are joined by a landing. At the center of the first story, between the doors, are two square fixed windows with the words “Village Hall’ above them. Much of this first floor was originally clad in rock-faced block still found on the side elevations. In addition, the north half of the first story included a garage door, presumably related to its past use as a fire station. The second story of the façade contains a pair of vinyl replacement windows decorative shutters and a pediment. Previously there was a grouping of three one-over-one double hung wood sash windows in this location. The stepped parapet at the top of the facade is accentuated with a pyramidal cupola, which was added sometime after 1915.9 At each end of the parapet is a finial that mirrors the cupola’s design. Behind the boomtown façade is a front gable roof. |
