Additional Information: | 2001- 3-story Romanesque Revival commercial block constructed of brick. Has been significantly altered since its construction in 1895. Ground floor of the main (south) facade into two storefronts divided by a pedestrian entrance that leads to the upper stories. Both storefronts are framed with iron support work and have been extensively modernized through the use of plate glass, casement windows and stucco. Above the iron frame and below the second story windows are several rows of corbeled brick and rock-faced stone beltcourse. Second story has seven segmentally arched windows. Third story has a rock-faced stone beltcourse and five segmentaly arched window openings. The ornat eparapet is corbeled and moulded. The east elevation is dominated by regularly spaced openings. Overall, window openings are defined by stone sills and brick segmental arches. Windows have been replaced with modern examples or infilled with brick or wood. In 1895 local mason, Marten Hartjes built the the hotel building for John Hammen. Hammen's building originally featured a a tavern, an upstairs ballroom and fifteen guest rooms. By 1912 Hammen had moved his business to another site. |
