Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This two story school building has a raised basement. The building also has a flat roof with parapet, brick walls, a concrete foundation, and a projecting square entry pavilion./ The first floor windows are grouped multi-light units. Openings on the third floor have been enclosed and only small sliding windows rae in these openings. Basement windows are multi-light sashes. The main entrance is set into the entry tower, which is decorated with shallow pilasters, battlements, and a large stone frontispiece. The entrance itself sits behind a Tudor arch. The Collegiate Gothic style was seen on school buildings and it makes a fine complement to the Gothic Revival St. Joseph's Church nearby. Although not elaborately detailed, the gothic features add distinction to a simple brick structure. St. Joseph's School is one of two extant parochial school buildings in Fond du Lac. It is also one of only three extant primary schools in the city. This building is historically significant for its association with primary school education in Fond du Lac. Parochial schools are an important part of the total educational picture in any city, educating children not enrolled in public school. And, because so few of Fond du Lac's educational resources are extant, this school takes on added significance. 2010-Previously surveyed with the address of 93 E 2nd Street. School is now operated as St. Mary's Springs Academy. First floor fenestration has been altered since last survey, which adversely affects the architectural integrity of the structure. |
