Additional Information: | With the only close to original storefront on Main Street this vernacular commercial structure is of interest primarily because of its state of preservation. 2013: The Huleatt Building, constructed c.1900, is a two-part brick commercial block. The facade features modest Romanesque details, including round arch windows and rock-faced window surrounds and accents. The brick parapet has a dentil cornice and a central square pediment with a nameplate that reads, “HULEATT.” The storefront has been greatly altered, but does retain corner pilasters. The second story of the facade contains a pair of central arched windows in a projecting bay flanked by two standard rectangular windows. All windows are vinyl replacements. The Huleatt family moved to Whitehall in the early 1890s. In 1897 Clarence Huleatt and L.M. Ekern established a hardware and furniture business in downtown Whitehall. In 1899 Huleatt bought out Ekern and the following year incorporated the new business under the name Huleatt Mercantile Company and constructed the Huleatt Building (1). |
