NOTES
Additional Information:THIS THREE-STORY HOSPITAL FEATURES AN IRREGULARLY-SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A BRICK EXTERIOR AND A FLAT ROOF. THIS STRUCTURE HAS BEEN ENLARGED SEVERAL TIMES. A STEPPED PARAPET AND A CORNICE-LEVEL STONE PLAQUE IDENTIFY THE ORIGINAL PORTION OF THE HOSPITAL, WHICH FACES S. IOWA STREET. PROMINENT STONE LINTELS DECORATE THE WINDOWS, ALTHOUGH SOME OPENINGS ON THE THIRD FLOOR HAVE BEEN INFILLED. A MODERN ENTRANCE ALSO HAS BEEN ADDED. THE BUILDING, ORIGINALLY DESIGNED BY F. L. KRONENBERG OF MADISON AND CONSTRUCTED IN 1913, IS CONSIDERED TO BE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. (SEE BIB. REF. A, B).

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

ST. JOSEPH'S HOSPITAL IN DODGEVILLE (NOW THE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL OF IOWA COUNTY) WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE FRANCISCAN SISTERS OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, LITTLE FALLS, MINNESOTA, WHO PRESENTED THEIR PLANS FOR THE HOSPITAL ON DECEMBER 10, 1912. TWO YEARS LATER IN JANUARY, 1914, THE HOSPITAL, LOCATED ON THE SOUTHERN EDGE OF THE CITY, WAS OPENED. THE CITY COUNCIL AND LOCAL CITIZENS WHO DONATED MONEY AND MATERIALS, PROVIDED THE ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THE AMBITIOUS PROJECT. (SEE BIB. REF. B).

A NUMBER OF ADDITIONS (1929, 1945-46, 1948-51, AND MORE RECENT) HAVE ENLARGED THE FACILITY WHICH NOW SERVES THE POPULATION OF IOWA COUNTY. (SEE BIB. REF. B).
