NOTES
Additional Information:This one-story other vernacular styled depot was built in 1888. (See Bib. Ref. A). It features a rectangular shaped plan configuration, a clapboard exterior, and a hip roof. Overhanging eaves are supported by large, ornate braces. The historically-named Illinois Central Railroad Depot is currently being renovated for offices. (See Bib. Ref. B). The structure is in good condition. This property is not part of the Iowa Street Historic District. Historical Background: The second railroad to reach Dodgeville (The first, the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, arrived on July 20, 1881), the Illinois Central (I.C.) Railroad connected the mining and agricultural community to Freeport, Illinois, the terminus of the newly-constructed Chicago to Freeport line of the I.C. The route from Freeport to Dodgeville, completed on March 28, 1888, was built by the Freeport, Dodgeville & Northern Railroad, a company incorporated by the I.C. to build the rail line. The connection between Freeport and Dodgeville was paralleled by that between Freeport and Madison; the construction of the two routes indicated the I.C.'s awareness of the population growth north of the Illinois border. (See Bib. Ref. C, D). When originally constructed, the I.C. railroad facilities in Dodgeville also included a round house (no longer standing). The deopt, constructed in 1888, is currently being renovated for use as office and/or retail space.
