| Additional Information: | This two-story clapboard clad house is tri-gabled ell variation of the local vernacular style. It is plainly detailed except at the window surrounds which have incised lintels. These are located at the second level and at the side. More ornate windows with multiple lights are located at the lower level of the primary "leg" of the ell shaped building and are probably the result of a later remodeling when the Craftsman style was in vogue. A deep porch wraps the primary facade and fills the legs of the ell. The classical detailing of this feature indicate that this might be a product of the same remodeling that effected the Craftsman style windows. An extension of the house to the rear may be earlier than the main mass. This building is an excellent and well maintained example of what appears to be a quite early vernacular style house with early 20th century remodeling in the Craftsman/Colonial style. This is the oldest building within the District. It is located on a large, wooded lot. This area was not covered by Sanborn-Perris Data Maps until after 1911. C.M. Smith constructed the building at 114 N. Seventh avenue in 1879 according to the Village of Sturgeon Bay's tax roll. Smith was in insurance salesman. In 1881 he became associated with a drug store operation which collapsed in 1886. Smith moved to California in 1886. Smith helped found the Congregational Church at Sturgeon Bay. |
