Additional Information: | This severely plain, single-story residential structure has a pitched roof with the eave parallel to the street. The street side of the roof is flared to cover a broad porch and is supported by turned porch posts. These posts and a panelled entry door are the onlly enrichments on this plain, clapboard sided house. Porch post brackets and a balustrade may have been removed; a contemporary iron hand rail is in place. This is an excellent example of an early, common local building type and is the only example of this vernacular building style remaining in the City that has not been substasntially altered or added to. The earliest tax records extant credit the property to Chris Leonhardt. In 1886 Leonhardt owned considerable property in the area under discussion but no buildings appear to be on site. In 1890 the area was set off as Leonhardt's Plat of Subdivision 4, Lot 9. Leonuardt obtained 22 lots from his subdivision all of which were valued at $450 in 1890. In 1895 Leonhardt constructed a buidling on one of his lots, 5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13 in Leonhardt's Plat, which jumped the value of his vacant lots from $125 to $950. The building is an early one, so the likelihood is that it was constructed by Leonhardt in 1895. No other development takes place on the place until after 1900. Chris Leonhardt was the Door County Treasurer between 1874 and 1900. He served inthe Wisconsin State Legislature for three terms. He operated a saloon and a grocery story and a hotel. |
