Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Resurveyed October 2012; changes include the replacement of porch windows and the reshingling of the roof. This farmstead consists of eight historic resources including two houses, a pump house, dairy barn, bank barn, basement barn, granary, and garage. The Two-Story Cube house was constructed c.1865. It is irregular in plan with stone walls and an asphalt-shingled hipped roof. The front elevation faces north and is symmetrical in plan with a central front door flanked by 1-over-1 double-hung windows. The door is sheltered by a small entry porch with a gabled roof and columnar supports. The second story of the façade contains two 1-over-1 windows. A gabled dormer is centered in the front roof slope; the dormer contains a small pair of 1-over-1 windows surrounded by patterned shingles. A 2-story enclosed porch is located off of the west elevation; the porch is enclosed by 1-over-1 windows at each story and contains a single door at the north elevation. Between 1845 and 1847, eighty-two members of the British Temperance Emigration Society arrived in Dane County, settling in the lands throughout the Towns of Mazomanie, Berry Springfield, Westport and Dane. Among these members, the Stewart's were one of few Scottish families to immigrate under the auspices of the Society. Born in Ayr, Scotland in 1817, Jane Stewart immigrated to the Town of Mazomanie in 1847 with her husband Gilbert and their children Jennie, Hugh, and James settling three miles east of the Village of Mazomanie at 9755 STH 19. Though Gilbert passed away the following year, Jane and her children continued to live and work the farm along with her parents, John and Elizabeth Craney. By 1870, Hugh Stewart had assumed. operation of the farm, raising livestock into the late nineteenth century. During this period, the majority of the outbuildings were constructed. The farmstead remained in the Stewart Family until 1900, when Jane and her daughter Jennie relocated to the Village of Mazomanie. Hugh's son, Gilbert Stewart Jr., later became an award winning butter maker at a creamery in the Town of Mazomanie. Gilbert too lived on the Stewart family farmstead, likely until his father moved away, at which time Gilbert was employed as a farmhand at a neighboring farm. Around 1904, the Bohn family took ownership of the property and continued its agricultural operation into the early twentieth century. Based on the time of ownership, Charles Bohn likely constructed the current dairy barn on the property though he is listed only as a "general farmer" in the US Federal Census records. Bohn and his wife, Mary, lived on the farmstead with their four children until about 1930. Following the death of her husband, Mary Bohn relocated to the Village of Mazomanie with her sons Marvin, Curtis, and Roger. George Cairns is the first to be recorded in the US Federal Census as a "dairy farmer." Cairns was born int he Town of Mazomanie around 1899 and lived for many years near the farm 9755 STH 19. Around 1930, George assumed ownership of the property and is the first to be listed as a dairy farmer in the US Federal Census records. Cairns continued to reside and operate the farm into the mid-twentieth century. Other building on site include" #223223 #223224 #223225 #223226 #223227 #223228 #223230 |
