Additional Information:THIS TWO-STORY DWELLING IS DESIGNED WITH A RECTANGULAR-SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, AN ASPHALT SHINGLED EXTERIOR AND A TRUNCATED, HIP ROOF. THE FULL-LENGTH, FLAT-ROOFED, FRONT PORCH IS SUPPORTED BY SHORT TUSCAN COLUMNS. EAVE-LINE BRACKETS, PEAKED WINDOW MOLDINGS AND A HIGH-PITCHED, CENTER GABLE ARE OTHER VARIOUS ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS FEATURED. BUILT IN 1883 (SEE BIB. REF. A), THIS RESIDENCE IS CONSIDERED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION. IT WAS HISTORICALLY KNOWN AS THE RICHARD CARTER HOUSE. (SEE BIB. REF. A). HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: RICHARD CARTER WAS BORN IN SUSSEX, ENGLAND, IN 1836, SETTLED IN GRANT CO. IN 1850 AND ATTENDED SCHOOLS IN LANCASTER AND PLATTEVILLE. AT THE OUTBREAK OF THE CIVIL WAR, IN WHICH HE SERVED UNTIL 1865, HE WAS A CLERK IN THE STATE LEGISLATURE. UPON HIS RETURN TO THE AREA, CARTER WAS ADMITTED TO THE BAR AND IN 1871 FORMED A LAW FIRM WITH DODGEVILLE RESIDENT S. W. REESE. (SEE BIB. REF. B). (THE REESE HOME IS LOCATED AT 401 S. IOWA STREET, 46/1). IN ADDITION TO HIS LEGAL PRACTICE, CARTER WAS INVOLVED IN LOCAL POLITICS, SERVING AS DODGEVILLE'S MAYOR IN 1892 AND AS COUNTY BOARD CHAIRMAN FROM 1889 THROUGH 1896. (SEE BIB. REF.
