Additional Information: | This 2 story building has concrete stucco exterior fabric and a flat roof. Part of the first floor has marble exterior fabric. The plan is rectangular. Alterations have taken away all of the original characteristics of this building. It has no architectural significance. This site was occupied by a 1 story frame building with a shingle roof. It was a livery in 1887. The Masons moved here in 1892. The building was a 2 story brick veneer structure with slate roof. A hardware store-Augustus W. Bosworth Jrs. was also here. Destroyed by the 1899 cyclone, a 2 story brick building with slate roof was built and the Masons owned the 2nd story. In 1912 a dry goods store and boot and shoe store shared the building. The Big Store was here 1900-19. From 1919-1923, the First National Bank was on the 1st floor. In 1926 the Masons bought the entire building for $5,500 and extensively remodeled it. In February 1927 they rented out the 1st floor to the City for use as City Hall and Library. A space for a store was also on the 1st floor (Padden Implement at this time). In 1964 the Bank moved back to this site. Pictures from the 1930's adn 1940's show a brick building with an entablature with small brackets and dentil moldings. Both stories are brick and there is a brick beltline between floors. A charitable and benevolet group, the Masons were charted here in 1874 and has held meetings in a building on the SW corner of 2nd and Knowles until their move here. (A fire gutted the other building). Between buildings the IOOF hall was used (now gone). The First National Bank was established in 1919 and located here until 1923. From 1923-1964 it was located at 204 S. Knowles (See SC 24-14). A 99 year lease for the 1st floor was obtained in 1964. At this time the building was remodeled. This building has no outstanding historical significance. Its changing development is similar to the rest of New Richmond's main street aera. |
