Additional Information: | This 2 story commercial building has a flat roof and rear addition. The 1st story is plate glass and metal exterior fabric. A large sign is on the 2nd level. The second story has a brick cornice/parapet with corbel and vertical pattern brickwork. Rectangular pattern brick is below this. Alterations have detracted from the integrity of this store to the point it is not significant. In 1887 this site was occupied by a 2 story frame building with composite roof. It housed a saloon and billards room. By 1892 the building was larger (rear part) and brick veneer. A general store was here. Destroyed in the 1899 tornado the replacement building was one story brick with a slate roof. It housed a saloon. By 1912 the movie theater was here (gone buy 1917 See SC 24-7). Aubrey Market was here at one time and in 1964 Montgomery Wards moved in. There is no significant historical feature about this store. Its development is similar to most of the rest of main street in New Richmond. |
