Additional Information: | This 2 story commercial building has brick exterior fabric with metal trim. The roof is flat and there are rear additions. There is a metal cornice with end brackets. Corbel brick work and rectangular pattern brick is in the 2nd story. There are brick pilasters. The 1st story has entries set back. Metal columns have "Parker & Topping, Brainerd, Minn" stamped on them. Doors are 15 pane glass and wood. Although this store front has more integrity than most commercial bhuildings here, most of it has been lost through alterations. It has no architectural significnce because of the alterations. In 1887 this site was occupied by a frame building with brick veneer and 1 story with slate roof. The store sold drugs and groceries. In 1892 the same building was a general store. After the 1899 tornado a brick building of one story with slate roof was built. It was a general merchandise store. By 1927 the roof was composite. Louis (or Lewis) Berg was married to Mary and 55 years old in 1910. Of English descent they lived at 153 N. Arch 1907-10, (see SC 25-12). The 1895 directory listes Dike H. Dodge as the partner. In 1901, it is Duke H. Dodge. DH Dodge lived at 247 West First Street in 1897. (See SCF 20-14). By 1917 this wsa the Ideal Store on the Murdock block or building. A photo shows this on top of the cornice, which has remained the same. "The Ideal Store" is on a sign that covers some of the upper story brickwork. There are 2 large plate glass windows. Now there is brick on part of this and the upper part jis filled in with wood. There was one central stepped back entry where the 2 doors are now. An awning was over the windows. This building is not historically significant having had no special role in the development of the city or being associated with important events or people. |
