Additional Information: | RISING TWO STORIES TALL, THIS COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR-STYLED RETAIL BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1847. IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, STONE EXTERIOR WALLS, A STONE TRIM AND A GABLE ROOF. THE ORIGINAL GABLE FRONT WAS ALTERED TO ITS PRESENT FLAT-ROOFED APPEARANCE AT AN UNSPECIFED DATE. (SEE BIB. REF. C). THE UNADORNED MASONRY CORNICE WAS ADDED DURING THE REMODELING AS WELL. BENEATH THIS CORNICE IS A DECORATIVE STRING COURSE, AND ABOVE IT IS AN EXTENDED PARAPET. QUOINS APPEAR AT THE CORNERS. STONE LINTELS AND SILLS EMBELLISH THE EIGHT-OVER-EIGHT WINDOWS ON THE SECOND STORY. THE STRUCTURE IS IN GOOD CONDITION. THIS BUILDING, KNOWN HISTORICALLY AS THE WILLIAM THOMAS AND COMPANY BUILDING (SEE BIB. REF. A), AND THE JOHN HUTCHINSON BUILDING (SEE BIB. REF. B), HOUSED COMMERCIAL BUSINESSES FROM 1847 TO 1929. OVER THE YEARS, THESE BUSINESSES RANGED FROM A SALOON IN 1884 AND 1915, TO A GROCERY IN 1894. THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972. 2012- "Built for William Thomas & Company, James Cribb's Dry Goods Store moved into this space in 1847. Five years later it housed Thomas Maloney's Soda Fountain and restaurant. It has also been the site of the Mineral Point Bakery; W.J. Hosken's Restaurant and Bakery; Bauer's Cafe; Theron Whitford's Beer Joint; Mrs. Fischer's Restaurant; Pat Ripp's Photography Studio; Tim Martin, accountant; Studio on High; and Simply Scarves." -from "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press. |
