Additional Information: | THIS COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR AND CONTEMPORARY STYLED BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN THE EARLY 1850'S. IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, AN ALUMINUM SIDED AND BRICK EXTERIOR, A METAL TRIM AND A FLAT ROOF. THE ONE STORY STRUCTURE WAS AT ONE TIME A TWO-STORY STONE BUILDING WITH A BRICK FACADE. THIS SEVERE ALTERATION TOOK PLACE IN C. 1970. (SEE BIB. REF. D). THE BUILDING IS IN GOOD CONDITION. THE HISTORIC NAMES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS BUILDING INCLUDE THE EAGLE SALOON (SEE BIB. REF. B), AND O'DOWD SALOON (SEE BIB. REF. C). THE SALOON BUSINESS WAS CONDUCTED AT THIS SITE FROM 1884 TO 1915. (SEE BIB. REF. A). THIS BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972. 2012- "The Eagle Saloon was in business from at leat 1847 but information about its original owner, builder, and date of construction have not yet been found. At first, the saloon was on the street level and the large room in the basement was rented to a variety of shop owners. That was reversed in 1859 when the Tribune rented the upper space and T. Engels continued his saloon business in the lower room. The Fiedler brothers added their name and date to the buillding in 1891 and may have made some other changes to the facade at that time. An extensive fire in 1970 destroyed the upper story of this building and severely altered its appearance. Other businesses here were: James Cribb; William Lean; Hesselin Bros. Great Western Clothing Depot; O'Dowd Saloon; Fred Moeller's Beer Hall; Tribune Offices; Engels & Immel; Fiedler Bros. Saloon; John B. Unger's Saloon; Pool Hall and Game Room; Slick's Liquor Store; The Sweet Shoppe; The Pointer Dog Cafe; and Bobbi Jo's Interiors." -from "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press. |
