Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. BUILT IN 1854 (SEE BIB. REF. H) IN THE FEDERAL STYLE, THIS TWO STORY HOUSE FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A STONE EXTERIOR, A STONE TRIM, AND A FLAT SHAPED ROOF. BRICK CHIMNEYS FLANK A STONE PARAPET ON THE ROOF TOP. ACCORDING TO THE INTENSIVE SURVEY REPORT, THE STRUCTURE IS DESIGNED IN THE TWO STORY CUBE STYLE. ALONG THE CORNERS OF THE BUILDING, COURSED ASHLAR QUOINS ARE DISTINGUISHING ELEMENTS. STONE LINTELS AND SILLS ADD DETAIL TO THE SIX-OVER-SIX SASH WINDOWS; members of Cothren's family etched their names in several panes. A SECOND STORY WROUGHT IRON PORCH APPEARS ON THE ELEVATION FACING TOWER STREET. THE MAIN ENTRANCE IS DETAILED BY A NARROW DOOR AND A FANLIGHT. THIS RESIDENCE IS IN GOOD CONDITION. MONTGOMERY AND ESTHER COTHREN OCCUPIED THIS DWELLING FROM 1854 TO 1880. (SEE BIB. REF. A, H). THE COTHREN HEIRS RETAINED THE PROPERTY FROM 1885 TO 1925. (SEE BIB. REF. A). MONTGOMERY COTHREN moved to New Diggings in 1839 from New York and to Mineral Point in 1843 at age 24. [K&L] He WAS A LAWYER, A DELEGATE TO THE TERRITORIAL LEGISLATURE in 1847, A STATE SENATOR in 1852, AND A CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE from 1853-1865 and again from 1876-1883.
