NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. A THREE-STORY BRICK HOTEL STRUCTURE FEATURES A STONE FOUNDATION, A FLAT SLOPING ROOF, AND A TWO-STORY, FRAME, FLAT-ROOFED, TOWER-LIKE, ROUND BAY WINDOW OVER THE CORNER ENTRANCE. DOUBLE WINDOWS WITH STRAIGHT FLAT WINDOW LINTELS, A CORNICE OF CUT BRICK WORK AROUND TWO SIDES OF THE STRUCTURE, PROJECTING WOODEN WINDOW AND DOOR HEADS ON THE STREET LEVEL FACADE, AN INSET PORCH IN THE EAST END AND A DOUBLE HOTEL ENTRANCE WITH A WOODEN CORNICE FURTHER CHARACTERIZES THIS LARGE STRUCTURE. IT WAS DEMOLISHED IN 1987 TO MAKE WAY FOR AN ODD FELLOWS MANOR. BEFORE 1892 UP UNTIL 1915, THE COLUMBIA HOTEL CONDUCTED BUSINESS AT THIS BUILDING. IN 1929, THE BUILDING WAS KNOWN AS THE TRACEY HOTEL. IT WAS CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN 1884 AND 1892. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: THE ONLY 19TH CENTURY HOTEL TO REMAIN IN THE PROPOSED HISTORIC COMMERCIAL DISTRICT, THIS STRUCTURE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT OCCUPIES A VISUALLY PROMINENT CORNER, AND BECAUSE IT HAS RETAINED MUCH OF ITS 19TH CENTURY HOTEL CHARACTER.
