Additional Information: THIS BRICK, TWO-STORY HOUSE FEATURES A SLOPING ROOF WITH RETURNED EAVES. FRIEZE BOARDS, HEAVY, STRAIGHT STONE WINDOW LINTELS AND SILLS, A SIDE LIGHTED ENTRANCE DOOR WITH A TRANSOM WINDOW IN THE STREET FACING GABLE END, AND A SCROLL BRACKETED DOOR HOOD ARE OTHER ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS OF THE RESIDENCE. A TWO-STORY FRAME (NOW VINYL SIDED) ADDITION TO THE NORTH AND A ONE-STORY FLAT ROOFED ADDITION AT THE REAR EXTEND FROM THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE. THIS BUILDING IS LOCATED IN THE WEST MAIN STREET HISTORIC DISTRICT.

ARCHITECUTRAL SIGNIFICANCE:

THIS HOUSE IS SIGNIFICANT TO THE ARCHITECTURAL HISOTRY OF PLATTEVILLE BECAUSE IT IS ONE OF THE BEST GREEK REVIVAL INFLUENCED HOUSE IN THE CITY OF PLATTEVILLE AND ITS ORIGINAL PORTION HAS BEEN MAINTAINED IN ITS ORIGINAL CONDITION, RETAINING THE ORIGINAL BRICK SURFACE AND STYLE. THIS HOUSE ORIGINALLY HAD A ROOF DORMER AND A BI-LEVEL FRONT PORCH THAT WAS ALTERED TO A TWO LEVEL, TWO-SIDED VERANDA AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY. (A) THE RESIDENCE WAS BUILT FOR JOHN LEWIS CA.1847.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

THIS HOUSE WAS ONCE ALSO THE RESIDENCE OF PROFESSOR D. E. GARDNER OF THE STATE NORMAL SCHOOL. HE WAS BORN IN ADAMS, N. Y. IN 1832 AND CAME WEST IN 1867. HE WAS SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS AND PRINCIPAL OF THE HIGH SCHOOL AT NEENAH, WISCONSIN BEFORE TAKING A PROFESSORSHIP OF MATHEMATICS AND MUSIC AT PLATTEVILLE NORMAL IN 1874.
