NOTES
Additional Information:BROAD EAVES, STRING COURSES BETWEEN STORIES, AND BANDS OF WINDOWS PRODUCE THE HORIZONTAL FEELING ASSOCIATED WITH THE PRAIRIE SCHOOL STYLE. CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN 1915 AND 1920, THIS HOUSE FEATURES A RECTANGULAR PLAN CONFIGURATION, A GABLE ROOF AND A STUCCO EXTERIOR. (A). THE TWO STORY STRUCTURE IS CONSIDERED TO BE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:

THE LARGE AND PROMINENTLY SITED HOUSE IS CHARACTERISTICALLY HORIZONTAL IN QUALITY WITH BROAD EAVES, STRINGCOURSES, AND BANDS OF WINDOW OPENINGS CREATING THE EFFECT.

(NOTE: THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY THAT MADISON BASED ARCHITECTS CLAUDE & STARCK DESIGNED THIS RESIDENCE. H. E. SCHREINER, A FORMER MAYOR OF LANCASTER, WAS ON THE BUILDING COMMITTEE WHEN THE MUNICIPAL BUILDING, A CLAUDE & STARCK PROJECT, WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1923. PERHAPS SCHREINER HAD SUGGESTED THE ARCHITECTS AFTER HIS OWN EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR WORK. ALSO, ANOTHER SCHREINER HOME, 425 W. MAPLE STEET, 44/22, IS A PRAIRIE SCHOOL DESIGN WHICH IS SIMILAR TO OTHER CLAUDE & STARCK WORK IN THE STATE. THIS RESIDENCE, TOO, WAS CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN 1915 AND 1920. SEE FINAL REPORT FOR MORE INFORMATION CONCERNING CLAUDE & STARCK).

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

HERBERT E. SCHREINER, BORN IN 1877 AND A MEMBER OF ONE OF LANCASTER'S MOST PROMINENT FAMILIES, WAS INVOLVED IN THE MERCANTILE BUSINESS (JOHN SCHREINER & SONS, 132 E. MAPLE STREET, 42/30) AND IN INVESTMENT SECURITIES WITH WILLIAM ROSS & CO., INC.

HIS COMMUNITY SERVICE ENCOMPASSED WORK ON THE BUILDING COMMITTEES WHICH SUPERVISED THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE LANCASTER HIGH SCHOOL (1925) AND THE MUNICIPAL BUILDING (1923). IN 1926, HE SERVED AS LANCASTER'S MAYOR. (B)

NOTE: SINCE FIRST SURVEYED IN 1983 A LARGE GARAGE ADDITION HAS BEEN ADDED ON TO THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE.
